GMB Young Members Regional Secretary, Joe Wheatley, ran a seminar today alongside colleagues from the TUC (Gareth Lewis) and Unite (Mary Sayer) on what trade unions are and why students should join a union when they enter the workplace at Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College in Bradford. It was a really great session with lots of student engagement and interest. We talked about income inequality between CEO's and their workers, poor workplace conditions and how to organise to tackle these problems by getting engaged with a union. We ran exercises and interactive question sessions. We also gave a brief guide on workplace rights - A few students working part-time were surprised to learn that they had a legal right to a 30min break when they work 4.5hrs (Hopefully their bosses are in for surprise on their next shift). Safe to say a lot of students were defiantly engaged and know more about what trade unions are than they did walking in, and walking out they definitely cleared me of all the GMB items I'd brought. A big thank you to Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College for letting us come in to talk students about unions. #GMBYoungMembers#GMBYorkshire#TUCYorkshire

GMB Yorkshire delegation at GMB Young Members Summit 2018. Lots of really fantastic discussions about how to improve young members activity across the country and how to improve our union. #GMBYM18#GMBYoungMembers#GMBYorkshire
Very productive young member meeting yesterday. Lots of activities planned for the upcoming months. Once again another big welcome to Jake O'Malley, our Regional Youth Officer, to his first Yorkshire Young Member Meeting. #GMB#GMBYoungMembers
As part of our ongoing Regional GMB Young Members School's Campaign Joe Wheatley and Gareth Lewis (TUC) spoke to sixth form students at Carlton Bolling College today. The aim of the campaign is to inform and engage young students about the importance of joining a trade union when they enter the world of work. There was a lot of engagement from students especially regarding their rights at work at today's session. A large group came up at the end to grab TUC leaflets, GMB Young Members leaflets and many signed our "Wages Not Based On Ages" petition. #JoinAUnion#EducateAgitateOrganise#GMBYoungMembers#TUCYorkshire#TUC150
GMB Young Members in all regions have been out today campaigning for #WagesNotBasedOnAges They were asking people to contact their MP to request they attend the #LivingWageBill debate. Equal work should mean equal pay, irrelevant of age. Our regions young members spent the day in Leeds City Centre speaking to lots of people who signed our petition. Thanks to Damon, Ben and Joshua!
GMB Young Members Network are calling on the government to include under 25s in the National Living Wage (NLW). Can you help them by sending your MP an email/tweet and ask them to attend the #LivingWageBill on 6th July and vote to extend the NLW to all? Find out who your MP is at TheyWorkForYou.com Let's get young workers the pay they deserve!
The TUC have organised a "Print your own Placard" event tomorrow at the Art House in Wakefield from 11:00am - 3:00pm This will be a great, family friendly event where kids, parents, and anyone else can get stuck in choosing colours, phrases and pictures to customise your very own placard or poster to take away with you. And don't forget to bring it with you to the Banner March at Wakefield Cathedral the next day at 10am.
